The Solicitors Regulation Authority has published a warning notice on the safe and responsible use of artificial intelligence as the technology becomes more common in legal research, drafting, document review and administrative work. The SRA recognises the potential for AI to improve efficiency and consumer services, but says its use does not change the standards expected of regulated firms and individuals. Solicitors remain responsible for the work produced and advice given, whether or not an AI tool has been involved.
The notice identifies AI-generated inaccuracies and fabricated citations, weak human oversight and the entry of confidential client information into tools without adequate safeguards as particular concerns. The SRA received 42 reports relating to potential misuse between July 2025 and July 2026 and is investigating issues involving citations, supervision and confidentiality. Firms are expected to understand the tools they use, establish proportionate governance and verification controls and protect client information. The warning complements AI-related additions to the SRA’s supervision guidance and its participation in the government’s advisory AI Growth Lab.
