The Bar Council of India has issued a direction requiring universities that provide legal education, or have affiliated Centres of Legal Education, to conduct physical inspections of those institutions before granting or continuing affiliation. The measure follows concerns about the continued operation of deficient law colleges and emphasises that a university’s responsibility for regulatory compliance does not end when affiliation is first granted.
The inspections are expected to examine the matters governed by the Rules of Legal Education 2008, including the availability and status of full-time faculty, classrooms, libraries, administrative facilities, academic resources and other institutional requirements. The direction is intended to replace paper-based assurance with on-site verification and to give universities and the Bar Council a stronger evidential basis for affiliation and oversight decisions. It forms part of a wider effort to improve consistency and quality across India’s legal education system.
