The Law Society of Ontario has announced that it will use its statutory summary revocation power in late 2026 for licences that have remained indefinitely suspended under an order of the Hearing Division. The measure applies where the suspension followed a finding of professional misconduct or a failure to comply with a Hearing Division order and the licensee has not met the specified terms and conditions for reinstatement within 24 months of the order.
Section 48(1)(b) of the Law Society Act authorises revocation in those circumstances. The process converts a prolonged indefinite suspension into revocation once the statutory criteria are met, providing a clearer final regulatory status where the licensee has not taken the steps required to return to practice. The Law Society says it will give affected lawyers and paralegals advance notice of the revocation order.
