The State Bar of California says its Board of Trustees approved updated revisions to the Practical Guidance for the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence in the Practice of Law on 14 May 2026. The guidance was originally published in November 2023 and was developed by the Committee on Professional Responsibility and Conduct to assist lawyers in understanding how existing ethical obligations apply when using generative AI.
The State Bar of California says the updated guidance reflects emerging developments in generative AI, including the use of agentic artificial intelligence. It also incorporates clarifications intended to support attorneys in the ethical and responsible use of these tools. The regulator describes the guidance as a living document that will continue to be revised as the technology evolves and new professional responsibility issues arise.
