The Law Society of Ontario (LSO) is inviting paralegals across the province to participate in virtual focus groups this October and November to help shape the future of the paralegal profession. Organised by the Paralegal Future Vision Working Group, these sessions are part of a broader initiative to address long-term challenges, enhance professional sustainability, and support growth in the sector.
Paralegals from all backgrounds—whether newly licensed, seasoned professionals, sole practitioners, firm-based, or employed in government, education, or non-legal service roles—are encouraged to share their perspectives. Interested participants must first complete a short survey by 12 September, ensuring that a diverse range of experiences and voices are represented.
Focus group discussions will explore key issues including barriers to practice and potential solutions, opportunities for paralegals to serve unmet legal needs, the adequacy of education, training and professional competence, and the types of supports required for the profession’s long-term sustainability.
The Working Group’s mandate is to examine systemic barriers, explore how paralegals can better serve underserved communities, evaluate training and continuing professional development needs, and develop actionable recommendations to strengthen the profession.
The Working Group—co-chaired by Shalini Konanur and Michelle Lomazzo, with members Paula Callaghan, Deborah Moriah, Greg Monforton, and Doug Wellman—will use the feedback to inform recommendations aimed at ensuring that Ontario’s paralegal profession remains accessible, resilient, and responsive to evolving legal needs.
