The Federation of Law Societies Canada is seeking feedback on draft amendments to its model code of conduct

The Federation of Law Societies of Canada is seeking feedback on draft amendments to its model code of conduct. The proposed changes seek to implement the call from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission for all lawyers in Canada to be provided with appropriate cultural competency training, covering topics such as residential schools, Indigenous rights, and treaties.

The Model Code of Professional Conduct was developed by the Federation of Law Societies of Canada in 2009 to standardize ethical and professional standards for lawyers nationwide. Thirteen out of fourteen provincial and territorial law societies have adopted it or ensured that their codes of conduct are consistent with it.

The Standing Committee on the Model Code regularly reviews and updates the Model Code of Professional Conduct to reflect current legal practice and ethics, including the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action 27.
